The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra will play the second opera of Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" ("The Ring Cycle" in English), "Die Walkure", in the form of opera-in-concert in the coming season, which I am eagerly anticipating for I had enjoyed very much the Orchestra's performance of the first opera of the cycle, "Das Rheingold" in the old concert season, which has been highly acclaimed and successful. (The third opera of Wagner's "The Ring Cycle" is "Siegfried" and the fourth is "Gotterdammerung".)

Three cello concertos by three different composers of different periods will be played in the new season and these are Haydn's "C major Cello Concerto", Saint-Saens's "Cello Concerto no. 1" and Shostakovich's "Cello Concerto no. 1". I love the unique deep sensuous sound characteristic of the cello and these concertos will definitely provide me total spiritual exultation and relaxation.

Two Richard Strauss's serious symphonic poem masterworks, "Thus Spake Zarathustra" and "Death and Transfiguration" are chosen by me in two of these concerts just because of their philosophical depth of meaning and sophisticated texture of music.

Among these anticipated concerts there will be performances of three piano concertos, the "Piano Concerto no. 2" by Rachmaninov, the "Piano Concerto no. 22" by Mozart and the "Piano Concerto no. 3" by Prokofiev, all of which are forever popular piano concertos.

Two of my favourite symphonies, Bruckner's "Fourth Symphony 'Romantic'" and Elgar's "First Symphony", will be performed in two of these selected concerts.

In my sixth selected concert on May 28, 2016, I will listen to an all-Russian-composer program consisting of Borodin's "'Prince Igor': Polovtsian Dances", Shostakovich's "Cello Concerto no. 1" and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade". What a wonderful combination of great masterpieces this would be!

In the concert of June 25, 2016, some Baroque music such as Bach's "Concerto no. 5, BWV 1056" and Purcell's "Chaconne in G minor" as well as relatively modern music such as Ligeti's "Violin Concerto" will be heard in the same occasion. To me this would certainly be a brand new classical music listening experience.

Lastly, I must not forget to mention that Bartok's different kind of concerto, "Concerto for Orchestra", Debussy's remarkable representative impressionist music, "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun", and Walton's riveting work for huge orchestra, massed choir and bass-baritone soloist, "Belshazzar's Feast", are three magnificent orchestral or choral music among my choices of music in the coming season of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
